THE KUTA INNOVATION
After the recent television switchover from analogue to digital there has been a high demand for HD programming that has resulted in TV production companies being forced to replace their existing analogue camera systems with new digital HD equipment potentially costing them tens of thousands of pounds during a recession! Over-zealous manufacturers’ are scare-mongering the broadcast industry into unnecessary future proofing by insisting that all cameras be connected using expensive optical fibre technology. After much research, we have discovered that most of the benefits offered by fibre are very rarely used in an average ‘budget conscious studio’. Therefore we have recently developed an alternative cost-effective solution that uses the latest military grade technology which enables the old analogue copper based systems to be reconfigured in such a way that can emulate up to 90% of the functionality of fibre optics, thereby saving TV companies/studios more than half the total cost of re-tooling!
HOW CAN KUTA EXPAND YOUR PRODUCTIONS BUSINESS?
In the broadcast TV market, there is a monopoly of manufacturers that insist on selling very specific systems… i.e for a studio situation there is an entire configuration revolving around “a studio camera” and everything in that system is designed to only work with that particular make and model of camera. Manufacturers ‘lock’ systems in such a way as to prevent you from substituting a cheaper camera or cameras produced by different manufacturers. More importantly, it is controversial that manufacturers have even prevented the use of portable camcorders designed for documentary and news coverage. This is a ridiculous proposition for smaller production companies that historically have been able to standardise on one model of camera for dual purpose use i.e. both studio and location filming.
Our system has been designed with ‘Open Source Architecture’ i.e. it is the first system of its’ kind that does not rely on expensive fibre technology but more importantly is the first universal system on the market that is totally agnostic to manufacturer and camera type i.e. permitting for the first time, the use of cheaper location camcorders in studio situations, affording budget conscious location production companies the opportunity to expand into studio production filming without the need to invest in studio cameras costing between £10 and 20,000 each.
HOW YOUR BUSINESS PERFORMANCE CAN IMPROVE DRAMATICALLY WITH THE HELP OF KUTA
We are a small production company that used the old non HD analogue equipment and were confronted by all of the issues we have described above. Faced with borrowing up to £100,000 in order to re-tool, we had no option but to find another solution or… go out of business! ‘Necessity is the Mother of Invention’ and after a good deal of research, proto-typing and testing, we have now designed and manufactured our own ‘bespoke’ system at a fraction of the cost we would have incurred to re-tool! Happily, we now find ourselves in the enviable position of competing alongside other producers of HD programmes thus netting higher profit margins without the major initial painful investment. Starlight Productions now has the option to expand in a variety of other areas:
1. To go into manufacturing and sell our solution to other studios/production companies.
2. To open up a ‘hire’ division and rent out our solution to companies that cannot afford to invest in the solution.
1. We have managed to retain a lot of work that would otherwise have left us if we hadn't re-tooled.
2 . We have been able to raise our production fees substantially, in line with what other production companies are now charging for the new HD filming format.
3. We have ventured into newer markets that were primarily in the higher end of the broadcast market. Our production capability and turnover has more than doubled… and all of this during a bleak world recession!
